Porta Romana Competition
Brief.
The brief for Melinda and Jeremy was to create a formal reception room that provides an escape from busy London life yet also acts as an impressive space where clients and friends could be entertained. Referencing pieces from the Porta Romana collection of lighting and furniture, the space needed to honour the client’s wish to play with colour, scale and material finishes.
Inspired by Porta Romana’s 2016 collection titled Cosmos and the timeless trend and fascination for deep space and the constellations above us in the night sky, Melinda and Jeremy’s formal reception room encapsulates a revival of this collection – bespoke to their needs. This is COSMOS II.
Design.
The essence of the concept was to achieve a design that evokes the feeling of being immersed in deep space. Where “metallic veins of gold meander creating glimmers of preciousness” in a room that is “unpredictably wild but always exciting”. The flowing lines and simple shapes of key Porta Romana pieces in French brass and cosmic gold will glow against the deep blues and reds of space.
The three main elements are a feature wall on the north chimney breast that displays a bespoke Constellation wall light, a mottled gold and neutral mural that covers the ceiling, falling down to the picture rail and setting off a vintage bronze sunburst ceiling mount and the Orbit 2 Chandelier and lastly the repetition of elliptical, crescent moon shapes seen in the Miro console table and side tables.
The final aesthetic takes influence from the colours associated with the celestial trend, especially the deep blues and rich golds. The bold and graphic shapes from Porta Romana will be contrasted by tactile soft furnishings in cream, deep red and soft pink. Artwork also inspired by the beauty of space will adorn the walls, providing multiple talking points in a truly spectacular formal reception room.
